The ayah in tafsir

The early mufassirun took this in its plain sense: life is tied to water, and the first of creation that people see is wet. Some said every animal’s origin is the nutfah. Al-Qurtubi notes both the general living thing and the particular fluid of generation. The ayah is a rebuke: will they not then believe?

What later eyes saw

Every cell we can point to is mostly water. Cytoplasm is an aqueous solution. No metabolism we know of runs dry. The search for life elsewhere starts with liquid water because that is the solvent in which the chemistry of bodies works. The Quran named water as the stuff of the living without a flask or a stain.

Where we stop

The verse does not teach a modern origin-of-life protocol. It does not settle debates about extremophiles. It names a sign people already knew in part — and which later biology has only made heavier.
