Milk from between dung and blood
مِن بَيْنِ فَرْثٍ وَدَمٍ
16:66
وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِي الْأَنْعَامِ لَعِبْرَةً ۖ نُّسْقِيكُم مِّمَّا فِي بُطُونِهِ مِن بَيْنِ فَرْثٍ وَدَمٍ لَّبَنًا خَالِصًا سَائِغًا لِّلشَّارِبِينَ
And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies — from between digested food and blood — pure milk, palatable to drinkers.
The ayah in tafsir
Ibrah: a lesson in the ordinary. From the belly, from between farth (the contents of the gut) and blood, a milk that is khalis — clear of those two — and easy to swallow. The mufassirun marvelled that two filths are neighbours and the drink is neither.
What later eyes saw
Chyle leaves the gut; blood carries precursors; the udder secretes milk that is not gut-slurry and not blood. The pathway is “from between.” The Quran’s between is anatomically the right place to point, long before a diagram of a lactating gland.
