How you know a noun

Ibn Ajurrum does not leave you guessing. A noun accepts the lowering particles (from, to, in, of). It accepts al-. It accepts tanwin. It is what you call when you say ya — O Zayd.

A verb will not take al-. You cannot say al-kataba as a verb with the article. A particle will not take tanwin.

    Al-

    The definite article. If it sits on the word, the word is a noun.

  2. التنوين

    Tanwin

    The extra n-sound at the end: -un, -an, -in. Nouns wear it. Verbs do not.

  3. حرف الجر

    Particle of jarr

    من، إلى، في، على، عن، الباء، اللام، الكاف. After these, a noun is lowered.

Quran

2:2

ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ — al-kitabu has al-. It is a noun. Kitaban in other ayahs wears tanwin. Both signs are enough.

When two signs clash in your head, trust al- and the jarr particle first. They are loud.
